The gallery says the show features “the work of 11 artists who were born outside of the United States: Anthony Abu, Nenée Angulo, Joseph Mushipi, Zuly Palomino, Julio Berroa, Agustina Markez, Becky Behar, Astrid Reischwitz, Mari Claudia Garcia, Edward Vasquez and Fritz Eichenberg. With this exhibition, which is based in part on an essay written by Thomas Merton, Hera Gallery acknowledges that, except those of us who are Native People, all of us are immigrants and that this nation was built by immigrants.’’

Mommy dearest?

The show is a national juried exhibition that brings together 27 artists to analyze, the gallery says, "motherhood in all its complexity, as well as at the absence of desired motherhood.’’

The Bell Block in the old commercial section of Wakefield, built when there were numerous manufacturing and farm operations in that village of South Kingstown, which now has many summer and weekend residents because of the coastline.

Will it into order

“I'm a Mess” (mixed media on canvas),  by Sonja Czekalski, in her joint show, “Body/Image,” with Tracy Wesisman, at Hera Gallery, Wakefield, R.I., through Oct 8.

“These two, concurrent solo exhibits explore ‘changing body and societal expectations’ and ‘womanhood and women’s bodies through the female gaze.’ Both women's work, from Weisman's fiber and mixed-media pieces to Czekalski's mixed-media and sculptural assemblages interrogate society and culture from a woman's point of view.’’

Exploring natural elements

 "2 Out of 4 Elements-Earth Plowed'' (watercolor on paper), by Ed Ferszt, in his show "New Work,'' through March 31 at the Hera Gallery, Wakefield, R.I. He uses art to explore the natural elements of the rural and exurban environment of southern Rhode Island, whose unofficial name is South County.

Mr. Ferszt has  long used water-based media, with his most recent work on stretched paper. He creates both small and large watercolors.

Cottages at Roy Carpenter Beach, in Matunuck, in South County, whose southernmost strip consists of beautiful barrier beaches.

Winged art

"Wings'' (mixed media ink jet print), by Mara Trachtenberg, in the  joint show "Wings,''  with Uli Brahmst, at Hera Gallery, Wakefield, R.I., through May 5.

This show interpretes the wing motif, as idea and physical subject, in different media. Wings are symbols of flight,  hope and freedom. Ancient myth has it that winged creatures can transverse the physical and cosmic realms  ---  through diverse realities.

The market's geometry

"The Market Is a Snake,'' by MICHAEL YEFKO, in the show "Further on Down the Yellow Brick Road,'' at Hera Gallery, in Wakefield, R.I., through June 20. In it he explores "temporal aspects of geometry.''

He says: "I want to create a landscape of meaning for the viewer where meaning evolves from visual cues and self-references.''
