Stairs to nowhere

  Escher Series #3  ( bird's eye walnut and quilted maple ,  one compartment ),  by Jay Rogers, in his show "Fantasy Architectures: Sculptural Boxes, at the Society of Arts + Crafts, Boston, through Jan. 6.    Mr.   Rogers  has been making art for over 30 years, says the gallery. His current series is inspired by   M.C. Escher  and  G iovanni-Battista  Piranesi . "Each sculpture differs in size, scope, and medium, but the one thing they seem to have in common is the puzzling nature of their construction. It's difficult to see where a piece begins or ends,'' with  ''strange optical illusions.''
